C&O Canal Association Donates an Additional $40,000 for Big Slackwater

On April 2, 2009, the C&O Canal Association presented a $40,000 donation to the National Park Service to support preparation of the Environmental Assessment for restoration of the eroded towpath in the Big Slackwater area of the C&O Canal National Historical Park (See NPS news release). The project would reopen the only closed section in the Park’s 185-mile historic route from Cumberland, Md., to Washington, D.C.

In August 2007, the C&O Canal Association donated $15,000 to the National Park Service as part of a matching grant from several partners that allowed for the first phase of restoration design to be completed.  In March 2009, the Association made an initial $25,000 donation for an Environmental Assessment, a key step in moving the project to the construction phase. (C&OCA article). The April 2 contribution brought the Association’s total support for the Big Slackwater restoration to $80,000. (See summary for further details.)
