C&OCA Volunteers Receive Awards

Two members of the C&O Canal Association have been honored by awards from the C&O Canal National Historical Park.

Skip Magee was named Volunteer of the Year for 2009 for the Palisades District, the portion of the park downstream from the mouth of the Monocacy River.  An indefatigable worker, Skip is Jim Hein’s right-hand man in organizing the Association’s contingent of the Volunteers In Parks (VIP) program.  He’s generous with his own tools and supplies, and often uses his personal vehicle to get people to projects and meetings.  Skip is the kind of person to have around whenever there’s a challenging job to be done.

William Bauman received the Western Park Volunteer Award for 2009.  For a decade, William has organized volunteers to staff Lockhouse 75 on summer weekends, and has done tip top work with the exhibits there.  He led the Association’s effort to refurbish the lockhouse after it was vandalized.  With the help of Mary Ann Moen, William made sure that the structure was ready for opening on Memorial Day.  His many other activities include assisting, with his wife Rita, at local festivals and special events in the communities along the canal.
