Canal Park to Receive Nearly $14 Million in Stimulus Funds
On May 4, 2009, the National Park Service
has announced that the C&O Canal National Historical Park will receive nearly
$14 million in funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
This will include $12.1 million for repair of the historic stone wall and towpath
in the Big Slackwater section of the park, which has been closed for years
due to severe erosion.
The balance of the recovery legislation funding for the C&OCNHP will go to projects that include: other towpath repairs; repointing of masonry; control of exotic plants; repair of Lock 22; and improvements to the boat ramp facilities at Point of Rocks and Brunswick. For further details, see the NPS news release. Background information on this issue and on C&OCA donations to the Big Slackwater project is contained in other articles in the News section of this website.
The efforts of all those who have expressed their views on the use of federal stimulus funds to assist the C&O Canal National Historical Park are greatly appreciated.
