Jonnie Lefebure will lead an optional hike before lunch at 9 a.m. The group will start at Bill’s Place and then head three-quarters of a mile down the Western Maryland Rail Trail to the Indigo Tunnel entrance, which is barricaded to visitors to protect the several species of endangered bats living there. The hikers will see the bridge detouring trail traffic around the tunnel and onto the towpath.
After the hike, about 11 a.m., the group will return to Bill’s Place for lunch. Participants can order off the regular menu. Everyone will be responsible for paying their own bill.
Some members enjoy camping the night before at Ridge Rider (formerly Little Orleans) Campground, which is near Bill’s. You can make reservations by calling the campground at (301) 478-2325.
